As Ghana prepares for another bustling festive season, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has begun tightening collaborative efforts with national security agencies to ensure a safe and seamless experience for the thousands of visitors expected to arrive for this year’s December in GH celebrations.

On Tuesday, the Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Maame Efua Houadjeto, paid a working visit to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohornu, to discuss comprehensive security arrangements for the country’s busiest tourism period. The meeting, which brought together all Police Commissioners, underscored the importance of early coordination as the yuletide approaches.

Discussions focused on strengthening safety across high-traffic areas, event grounds, entertainment zones, and hospitality facilities locations expected to experience heavy patronage during the annual tourism boom. The GTA chief said the collaboration was crucial, especially as Ghana continues to attract a rising number of visitors drawn by the country’s vibrant holiday calendar.

Ms. Houadjeto commended the Ghana Police Service for what she described as consistent professionalism and visible security improvements. She highlighted the findings of the 2024 Tourism Report, which showed that 65% of international visitors ranked Ghana among the safest destinations in Africa, a statistic she said contributed significantly to the country’s growing appeal as a preferred travel hub.

According to her, safety remains central to maintaining the credibility and success of the December in GH brand. “Tourism thrives on trust, and our visitors must feel protected in every space they explore,” she noted, adding that the GTA is committed to working closely with the Police Service to uphold high security standards across the sector.

IGP Yohornu expressed confidence in the Service’s readiness for the festive peak. He assured the GTA of enhanced deployments, improved surveillance, and stronger coordination with event organisers and hospitality operators. The objective, he said, is to deliver a smooth and incident-free season for both domestic revellers and international tourists.

“We are fully prepared to support the tourism sector during this crucial period,” the IGP affirmed, stressing that proactive policing, visible patrols, and swift response mechanisms would anchor the security strategy.

This year’s December in GH is expected to attract large numbers of diasporans, holidaymakers, and entertainment enthusiasts, with major concerts, cultural showcases, nightlife experiences, and community festivals scheduled throughout the month. Authorities believe that sustained collaboration between the tourism and security sectors will bolster Ghana’s reputation as a safe, lively, and welcoming holiday destination.

With preparations now underway, industry players are optimistic that the 2025 festive season will not only boost tourism revenue but also strengthen Ghana’s position as a leading entertainment and cultural hotspot on the continent.
