Zenith Bank Ghana has once again cemented its reputation as a leading financial institution, winning the prestigious Bank of the Year – Ghana award at the 2025 edition of The Banker Awards in London. This marks the sixth time the Bank has claimed the title, reinforcing its standing as one of the country’s most consistently decorated banks.

The accolade, presented by The Banker magazine of the Financial Times Group, coincides with Zenith Bank Ghana’s twentieth anniversary, making the recognition both timely and symbolic.

The award evaluates institutions against rigorous criteria including capital strength, asset quality, profitability, cost management, technological innovation, and capacity to adapt to regulatory and economic shifts. Zenith Bank Ghana impressed judges with its combination of robust balance sheet management, prudent risk practices, and sustained investment in technology-driven banking solutions.

The committee highlighted the Bank’s stable capital position, continued profitability, and strategic expansion of digital channels as clear indicators of its steady trajectory, even amid sector-wide challenges. A defining moment was the Bank’s recapitalisation in September 2024, which saw its stated capital rise from the regulatory minimum of GH¢400 million to GH¢1 billion, fully financed from retained earnings. This move preserved shareholder value while enhancing investor and customer confidence.

The Bank has also strengthened key partnerships with the Development Bank of Ghana, the African Guarantee Fund, and the Mastercard Foundation’s Bridge-in Agriculture programme. In its first month, the latter initiative saw GH¢22.2 million disbursed to agribusinesses, underscoring the Bank’s alignment with Ghana’s development priorities.

Technology investment was another crucial factor in the award. Zenith Bank Ghana’s adoption of the Calypso platform has optimised treasury and risk operations, improving transaction speed and reducing errors. The launch of Z-Transfer, a bulk payment platform, further demonstrated the Bank’s commitment to efficient, secure, and scalable services for high-volume clients.

Commenting on the achievement, Managing Director and CEO Henry Onwuzurigbo described the recognition as a shared triumph. “At twenty years, this award celebrates the work that has gone into building a trusted and resilient institution. It reflects our staff’s dedication, the confidence of our clients, and the support of our regulators and shareholders,” he said.

He added that the accolade serves not as an endpoint, but as encouragement to maintain high standards, deepen technological investments, strengthen governance, and continue supporting sectors critical to Ghana’s economic growth.

Zenith Bank Ghana’s sixth victory follows previous wins in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2024, demonstrating a remarkable consistency in performance and underscoring its status as one of the country’s most stable and forward-looking banks.

“As we look to the next decade, our focus remains on building sustainable banking foundations. Consistency is earned, and our commitment is to continue delivering excellence in service and innovation,” Mr Onwuzurigbo concluded.
