The Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND) has organised the 2024 Young Green Entrepreneurs Forum to educate participants on effective ways to run green business solutions.

The conference will be held under the theme “Empowering the Green Generation: Nurturing Young Green Entrepreneurs in Ghana” brought young entrepreneurs running eco-friendly businesses as part of the agenda of reaching net zero through youth-led innovative solutions.

Delivering the keynote address, the Women and Youth in Trade Expert at the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Gonaya Sethori, called on young entrepreneurs to capitalise on the growing opportunities in green business solutions across Africa.

She commended the forum for providing a platform for young people to connect, exchange ideas, and explore business solutions that align with Africa’s green economy goals.

“To young people here, there are a lot of opportunities that Africa has for you. And I like what this forum stands for because these are the initiatives we are supposed to support as development partners,” she stated.

Miss Sethori emphasised that the gathering offered a crucial opportunity for entrepreneurs to showcase their talents, gain inspiration from speakers, and build networks that could drive the growth of green businesses.

“This is a very important gathering for you to network, for you to show your abilities as a young entrepreneur, for you to be inspired by the speakers who will come, but most importantly, keep on showing up for such events,” she urged.

On her part, SYND Board Member, Selina Zefo Kere emphasised the critical role of young entrepreneurs in shaping a sustainable future for Ghana.

According to her, the youth must harness their creativity, innovation, and resilience in addressing the nation’s climate and environmental challenges.

“As we navigate the complexities of climate change, environmental degradation, and economic uncertainty, it has become imperative to harness the innovative spirits, creativity, and resilience of our youth,” she said.

She further highlighted the unique role young entrepreneurs play as “torchbearers of a greener and more sustainable tomorrow.”

Mrs Kere underscored the importance of youth-driven ideas, passion, and determination in catalyzing transformative change, encouraging young people to seize the opportunity to lead the country’s sustainable development.

“To young entrepreneurs, I say this to you, your ideas, passion, and determination are the catalyst for transformative change.

“Your generation has the unique opportunity to redefine the narrative of Ghana’s development, prioritising economic growth, social justice, and environmental stewardship,” she said.

During a panel discussion, Maria-Ancilla Bombande with the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), advised participants to look out for mentors and people who would guide and assist them in the initial stage of starting a green business.

The President of the Africa Chamber for Youth Development, John Appiah, also urged the young entrepreneurs to be open to partnerships and not completely shy away from seeking assistance from relatives and friends.

“Family and friends are your go-to place for support, especially financially when starting a business,” he said.

Nonetheless, ACEP’s Maybel Acquaye quickly added that, “everyone wants profits, so instead of going to them [family and friends] and just taking their money, you can sell some equity to them so that they feel part of your company and readily support when you call on them.”

The 2024 Young Green Entrepreneurs Forum marks a significant step in empowering Africa’s youth to take ownership of their economic future through environmentally friendly business practices, with support from both AfCFTA and other development partners.
