C.K. Akonnor - he was sacrificed?

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has blamed Black Stars Coach Charles K. Akonnor for the recent lackluster performance and woes of Ghana’s national team, and gave the former Black Stars captain the sack with immediate effect from 13th September, 2021.

In addition, the GFA terminated the appointment of Akonnor’s  two assistants. But the GFA should not be quick to heap blame on the head coach’s head solely when the management owned Akonnor several month’s pay. It is obvious that collective blame has become individual culpability.

The sack follows the receipt of the Technical Report from the Head Coach of the Senior National Team and the report from the Black Stars Management Committee, following the country’s Group G World Cup qualifying matches against Ethiopia and South Africa.

The Executive Council considered the two reports and decided to end its relationship with Akonnor and the two assistants. The Council has formed a three-member committee, which is made up of Vice President Mark Addo, Upper East Regional Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Salifu Zida and Dr. Randy Abbey, to find a head coach and two assistant coaches for the Black Stars within the next 72 hours.

Ghana currently have three points after the two games of the World Cup qualifiers. Akonnor, who was appointed in January 2020, superintended 10 games of the Black Stars, of which they won four. During 20 months, he qualified the Black Stars to partake in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations slated for Cameroon next year. The Black Stars will play against Zimbabwe in the next round of qualifiers in October.
