Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with Qatar has received a major boost as the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, concluded a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening political, economic and security cooperation between the two nations. The minister, who is on an official visit to Doha at the invitation of Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, shared extensive updates from the trip on his official Facebook page.

According to Ablakwa, bilateral discussions centred on expanding trade relations, enhancing strategic security collaboration and exploring joint efforts in conflict mediation. Both countries, he noted, share a firm belief in a rules-based multilateral system, with peace and stability as its foundation.

A key outcome of the talks was a mutual commitment to ease visa restrictions to promote the movement of people, goods and services. This move is expected to significantly boost the utilisation of the direct flight connections already operating between Ghana and Qatar. The minister emphasised that improving mobility will deepen economic interaction and create a more enabling environment for businesses in both jurisdictions.

In a major step toward labour cooperation, Ghana and Qatar have also agreed to fast-track a labour mobility agreement that will unlock employment avenues for thousands of skilled young Ghanaians. The Gulf state, which hosts a large expatriate workforce, has long been a destination for professionals across multiple sectors, and Ghana is positioning itself to tap into this demand through structured, well-regulated channels.

The two countries have additionally resolved to host a Presidential Ghana–Qatar Business Forum during President John Mahama’s visit to Doha next month. This forum is expected to serve as a platform for fostering partnerships between Ghanaian and Qatari companies, encouraging joint ventures and presenting investment opportunities in priority sectors.

Ablakwa’s mission yielded further gains when he held what he described as an “extremely successful” meeting with Sheikh Mansour bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani, the influential Chairman of Al Mansour Holdings and a member of Qatar’s royal family. The Sheikh has pledged billion-dollar investments into several of President Mahama’s flagship initiatives, signalling one of the most significant injection of Qatari capital into Ghana in recent years.

The projects earmarked for investment include the proposed new city development, the western corridor rail network, a national gold refinery, the Volta Economic Corridor under the 24-Hour Initiative, as well as regional hospitals and regional airports. These initiatives form a crucial part of the government’s broader agenda to modernise infrastructure, expand industrial capacity and generate sustainable employment.

Al Mansour Holdings is expected to visit Accra within days to engage directly with ministers, technical teams and sector leaders to fast-track the implementation process. The swift follow-up demonstrates Qatar’s readiness to translate commitments into actionable partnerships.

Ablakwa concluded his updates with a renewed message of optimism, echoing President Mahama’s assurance that “Ghana is open for business again.” With deepening diplomatic ties, expanded labour cooperation and significant investment interest from one of the Gulf’s most influential business families, Ghana appears poised to harness new economic opportunities emerging from the Middle East.
