The total value of mobile money transactions hit GH¢32 billion in 2019. The value realized was about 45 per cent increase over the GHc22.6 billion that was realized in December 2018.
The number of mobile money accounts held at commercial Banks ending December 2019 reached GHc3.6 billion, up by 38 per cent from 2018.
This was contained in the latest Economic and financial data released by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
The data also showed that mobile money had about 397,000 agents, however, just 226,000 were active. The number of mobile money accounts registered in the country as verified by various regulators was 32.5 million, while active accounts were about 14.5 million.
Based on the BoG’s data total value of transactions carried out on E-Zwich biometric smart card ending December 2019 was GH¢763.8 million, slightly up from GH¢728 million in 2018. In terms of cumulative enrollment, persons using Ezwich reached 3.1 million in 2019, compared to 2.8 million in 2018.
In 2019, the value of cheque cleared was almost GH¢17 billion. This represents a marginal decline from GH¢17.2 billion realized in 2018. The data also showed that in 2019, 599,000 transactions were done with cheques.
